Cigarette Market Price Monitoring in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, while most products adhere to maximum retail price (MRP), tobacco products break this norm, being sold at prices higher than the MRP. This practice not only undermines consumer protection but also results in significant revenue losses for the government. Research by the Bureau of Economic Research (BER), the University of Dhaka, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Network for Tobacco Tax Policy (BNTTP), has uncovered that cigarette companies evade nearly 5,000 crore BDT annually through these illegal pricing practices. To address this issue, BNTTP has launched a monthly market monitoring initiative, shedding light on the prevalence of such violations and their broader implications. This data is for research purposes only.
