BER and BNTTP have jointly organized a training program on the `Economics of Tobacco and Tobacco Taxation: Public Health Perspective’. This three days long training program took place from July 26 to 28.
Unlike the previous four cohorts, the 5th cohort of the training program was conducted online because of the current pandemic situation. 21 participants including tobacco control advocates, civil society organizations, media representatives, and students attended this training program through the cloud-based meeting software Zoom.
The sessions included Economics of tobacco ( Conducted by Mr. S M Abdullah), Tobacco tax: Country Experiences (Conducted by Dr. Nasiruddin Ahmed, Professor, BIGD and former chairman, NBR), Tobacco tax: Theory and basic concepts (Conducted by Dr. Syed Mahfuzul Huq, National Professional Officer, WHO), Industry Interference (Conducted by Sushanta Sinha, Special Correspondent, Jamuna Television) and Tax administration; with a focus on tobacco tax (Conducted by Aminur Rahman, Ex-member, National Board of Revenue.
The program ended with a session conducted by Dr. Rumana Huque, professor, Department of Economics, University of Dhaka, and Focal person, BER where she shared the tobacco tax policy formulated by BER with the participants. The training program was moderated by the BER project manager.
