The Tobacco Control & Research Cell (TCRC) of Dhaka International University (DIU) has arranged a webinar on the occasion of the World No-Tobacco Day, which is observed around the world on May 31 every year.
The webinar on ‘Health Risk of Tobacco and the Role of Youth Society’ was held on Wednesday (May 26). Adviser of Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance (BATA) and former Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Prof Dr Pran Gopal Datta joined the event as the chief guest with TCRC’s President and Chairman of Board of Trustees of Dhaka International University Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary, MP, in the chair.
Moderated by TCRC’s Program Manager Farhana Zaman Liza, Vice Chairman of DIU’s Board of Trustees Dr S Quadir Patwary and Technical Adviser of The Union Advocate Syed Mahbubul Alam Tahin spoke at the virtual event, among others. About 300 participants from different anti-tobacco platforms joined the webinar.
In his speech, Prof Dr Pran Gopal Datta said that now about 5.4 million people die every year due to smoking, the number of deaths would increase by 11 million in 2030. Not only smokers, non-smoker people are also affected adversely due to smoking in public places. So the smoking as well as the use of tobacco products must be controlled in the interest of public health, he added.
Syed Mahbubul Alam Tahin said that the tobacco companies confuse people through various tactics and advertisements. The malpractice and tactics of tobacco companies must be stopped for the interest of the people, he added.
