Honourable prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s announcement at the first-ever South East Asian Speakers’ Summit on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in 2016, the government of Bangladesh is committed to make the country free from tobacco by 2040. As part of this plan of action, the prime minister emphasized on the creation of a national advanced tobacco control policy and building a new sustainable Health Development Fund from the health development surcharge on tobacco products.
After the announcement of honourable PM, Bureau of Economic Research (BER), University of Dhaka has formulated this tax policy with the opinion of national-international tobacco control experts, economists and NGOs to assist the government in tobacco control and formulation of national tobacco tax policy. This policy also uploaded on the BNTTP website to take the opinion of all the people for 30 days.
On 18 May 2021 BER and BNTTP handed over the `Tobacco Tax Policy Outline 2021-2030′ to Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Muneem, Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR).
